“Employability, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in the Life Sciences”

Education and Teaching theme workshop

School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee

Thursday 31st August 2017

Workshop co-organisers: Dr Graham Christie (Life and Biomedical Sciences education, School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee) and Dr Derek Scott (Institute of Education in Medical and Dental Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Aberdeen)

The three Es - Employability, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship - are relevant to all students, and at all levels of study, so it is important we offer opportunities for students to develop the essential knowledge, attitudes, behaviours and skills that they will require throughout their working lives.  With debate currently taking place about reforming the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey combined with the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) which embraces employability, now is an important time to take stock on employability in higher education.

In this workshop we would like to address and discuss the following questions:  How can we increase awareness of employability amongst our students?  How best can we embed elements relevant to employability, enterprise and entrepreneurship in undergraduate Biosciences curricula?  How do we measure impact?  What are the generic skills employers are now looking for, and how can we ensure our students gain confidence and experience using these skills?  How can our graduates best promote and demonstrate evidence of their wide range of skills and competencies as they seek employment or postgraduate study?  What role can Personal Development Programmes and Portfolios play in enhancing employability?

This one-day workshop is open to anyone who is involved in undergraduate teaching, employers and careers advisers, and will be an opportunity to share good practice in the key areas outlined above.  The day will consist of separate sessions to include keynote speakers (to be announced), short presentations and time to discuss these themes and network with attendees.
