The HealthTech and Medicines KTN is pleased to announce that the BioMedical Catalyst competition is now open. The new BioMedical Catalyst will help KTN members to access much needed funding to aid the development of innovative products and technology, in attracting private finance and ultimately to treating areas of unmet medical need.

Supporting innovation in healthcare
The BioMedical Catalyst, launched as a key action within the government’s Strategy for UK Life Sciences and opened for applications today, it is designed to directly address this funding gap and provide grants to more effectively translate basic research into products with market potential. This joint £180m Technology Strategy Board and Medical Research Council programme offers funding to innovative small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and academics looking to work either individually or in collaboration to develop solutions to healthcare challenges.
The Biomedical Catalyst will accept innovative ideas from any sector or discipline that demonstrate the potential to provide significant positive healthcare and economic impact.
Three categories of grant are available:
Feasibility award Early-stage award Late-stage award

Business-led applications:
Duration – up to 12 months
Maximum grant – £150k
Funding proportion – up to 75% of total eligible project costs
Academic-led applications:
Confidence in Concept Awards will be made available to researchers in major
universities Key features

Duration – up to three years
Maximum grant - £2.4m
Funding proportion – up to 50% of total eligible project costs
Academic-led applications:
Duration – up to three years
Maximum grant – £3m
Funding proportion – awarded at RCUK fEC rules

Support is available for projects arising from any sector or discipline that are aimed at addressing healthcare challenges. Example solutions may include (but are not limited to); stratified healthcare (both therapy and diagnostic components), regenerative medicine, diagnostics, eHealth and mHealth solutions, enabling medical technologies and devices. Grant funding through the Biomedical Catalyst is available to UK businesses (SMEs) and academics looking to develop innovative solutions to healthcare challenges either individually or in collaboration.
Biomedical Catalyst Batch Dates FY 2012/13
The Biomedical Catalyst will operate in response mode and will in essence be "always open". However to assist the processing of applications there are key submission and assessment dates.
